Book “Beyond the Mountains” (2025)
Beyond the Mountains is a visual archive of illegal dumping in Japan. Focusing on large-scale cases that are subject to specific hindrance removal projects under the Industrial Waste Special Measures Law, which expired on March 31, 2023, this body of work revisits illegal dumping across the nation, mainly in mountainous areas during the 1990s and 2000s, along with related important matters.
Initially intended to be a straightforward documentary project, my artistic practice ends up referencing and reproducing archival images from the national government, local authorities and residents, and combines them in fragments with my own photographs of present scarred landscape into a book format. In doing so, I seek to depict the discrepancy between the impression given nowadays and the unexposed past of my country, rather than narrating the specific story of each incident.
The project aims to reconsider the impact of waste management on nature in all parts of the world, using Japan as a case study. Waste is relevant to all human beings, but in terms of its management, it varies widely from place to place and cannot be entirely generalised. There are also ideological, cultural and political factors involved. As such, this publication is intended to invite the reader on a journey of wondering in their own context, rather than trying to make them understand what is happening in Japan.

《Beyond the Mountains》は、日本における不法投棄のビジュアル・アーカイブである。そのリサーチ対象は、2023年3月31日に失効した産業廃棄物特別措置法の特定支障除去事業の対象となった大規模事案を中心に、1990年代から2000年代にかけて多発した全国各地の不法投棄とその関連重要事項である。
当初はストレートなドキュメンタリー・プロジェクトのつもりだったが、国や自治体、住民の記録画像を参照・複製し、傷跡の残る現在の風景を撮影した私自身の写真と断片的に組み合わせて本の形式にすることに行き着いた。それは、それぞれの事件にまつわる具体的なストーリーを語ることよりも、現在の日本の印象と知られざる過去の姿とのギャップを表現しようと思ったからだ。
日本はあくまでケーススタディであり、世界各地の廃棄物処理が自然に与える影響について再考を促すことが、このアーカイブの目的である。廃棄物はすべての人間に関係するものだが、その管理に関しては場所によって大きく異なり、世界共通ではない。思想的、文化的、政治的な要素も関わっている。そのため本書は、日本で起きていることを理解させようとするものではなく、読者を各々の文脈で考える旅へと誘うことを意図している。
